Description
Oxygen symbolically represented as O2 forms the 21 percent of the earth's atmosphere. It makes life possible on earth and supports combustion. Being the most abundant of all elements on earth, oxygen forms 85 percent of oceans. Oxygen is a major component of most rocks and minerals and comprises 46 percent its solid crust.
Its other properties include:
- Constitutes 60 of the human body
- Colorless, odorless and tasteless
- Poor solubility in water
- A specific gravity of 1.105 makes it slightly heavier than air
- When it is cooled to its boiling point of -297F (-183C), it gets converted into a transparent, pale blue liquid and is slightly heavier than water.
- Reacts with all elements, except inert gases and forms compounds called oxides.
The rate of oxidation varies as per reacting elements. For example, magnesium can rapidly get oxidized, igniting spontaneously in air. On the other hand, noble metals like gold and platinum only oxidize if a very high temperature is provided.
