Generic Propecia (generic name: finasteride; brand names include: Proscar / Fincar / Finpecia / Finax / Finast / Finara / Finalo / Prosteride / Gefina / Appecia / Finasterid) is used to treat men with male pattern hair loss to increase hair growth on the scalp and to prevent further hair loss. More than 1 million men in the US have used Propecia since the drug's introduction in 1998. Clinical studies of Propecia demonstrated visible results. The effectiveness of Propecia was demonstrated in studies of men, aged 18 to 41, with mild to moderate hair loss at the top and middle front of the head. Propecia works by reducing DHT (dihydrotesterone), a key cause of hair loss. It inhibits the formation of DHT in the scalp, thus helping to reverse the balding process. Propecia does not affect hair on other parts of the body. There should be no need to change your usual hair care routine (for example, shampooing or haircuts) because you are taking Propecia.
